FIRST OF ALL SORT OUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A MODEL READ THIS PAGE CAREFULLY!!
If you are just starting out it is a good idea to think carefully about whether you really want to be a model, and what it involves. I have talked to a lot of girls who have a vague idea of becoming a model based on what they see on TV and read in magazines, a sort of childhood ambition for girls, like being a ballerina or an air hostess, or pop star. I also see lots of 'models' who really only want to have a portfolio to keep, something to show their friends or their kids later in life. And quite a few girls go around telling everyone they are models and feel they need some pictures to back it up. There is nothing wrong with this, if you are happy going around telling stories that are not true, but don't waste people's time saying you are available for work if you are too busy with other things or are too disorganized. Modeling is hard work and only those who are committed to it will make it. Remember there are lots of other girls who want to do it, so if you are a pain in the backside, they will just get someone else. Sort out whether modeling is a problem for your family or boyfriend before you even approach me, or other agencies. If you do decide to go for it be careful. Be very suspicious of contacts you make, especially on the Internet, as there are a lot of people out there who may try to deceive you. Don't be bullied into signing agreements or having expensive photographs taken. Say you want to think about it first, and then discuss it with your family or friends. Watch out for the scams where an agency may they tell you that you need to have photos taken by their own photographer. The photos are often rubbish and very expensive, and there is probably no work at the end of it. A reputable model agent would usually take a quick Polaroid photo of your face as reference, and then if required book you in with one of their recommended photographers at a later date. These sort of agencies have always been around looking for gullible girls, they make money on registration fees and selling photos and are not interested in finding you work. They often go around the country hiring rooms in the local hotel and placing adverts in the local newspapers for a talent search. It doesn't matter if you decide to work with me or another photographer, always look at some of the photographer's work beforehand, and maybe check out several before you decide. Each person has his or her own style mine may not be right for you. If it isn't that's fine but don't waste time if you don't think you will like the work.
It is very difficult to get into modeling and be prepared to persevere if you really want to do it. Watch out for people who seem too keen to have you. They may be after your money or want you for dodgy reasons. I have seen many girls who are so desperate for someone to say yes that they end up getting involved with the wrong people who put them off modeling completely. Unless you make it with one of the big agencies it is unlikely you can ever make it pay like a full time job. Be aware of this and keep up your studies at college or get another job so you don't have to rely on modeling. In any case it is a short career and by your late twenties you are getting old in modeling terms. Be professional and treat it like any other job. If you are unreliable or have the wrong attitude people will not want to work with you. Try to act grown up and be polite to people. Be assertive and firm if people try to pressure you into signing things or doing work you are unhappy about. Try to look after your face and figure and always turn up with the right clothes and your make-up. Look after your hair and nails and avoid too many tattoos or weird piercings, because whether you think these are cool and fashionable or not, I have known girls lose jobs because of them. Try to look in magazines and look at the poses to see how the models stand and what looks good. When no one is looking you can always practice looking in a mirror.
It is not my intention to put people off modeling and if it sounds like that sometimes it may be because I have spoken to so many girls who have had disappointments and upsets in this business. If you really want to do it, keep your dreams alive, believe in yourself and be prepared to persevere, but if nothing else remember this, you cannot trust anyone, and for every genuine person there are many more who are up to no good. Treat it seriously and be professional, and you stand just as good a chance as anybody.
Good Luck!
